Now it can be told

A few months ago a couple of my friends ventured into the the world of racehorse ownership for the first time. "Why ?" was the burning question I wanted to ask knowing full well that over 90% of owners lose money. "To get inside information" was the optimistic reply.

The problem, it seemed to me, was that a horse could be fully trained up to win a big race but if it felt off colour on the day you had no way of knowing. "Not true" said my friends, you stick a thermometer into the rear end and measure the animals temperature. If it's anything other than normal you don't have a bet. "That's logical and scientific" they explained as they borrowed another fifty quid.

Now it won't have escaped your attention that one or two bookies are offering odds on some of the major poker tournaments and it must be equally obvious that we now have a foolproof system for sorting out the winner. You narrow the field down to those players currently showing the best form and shove a thermometer up their rear ends before calling up the bookie of your choice to relieve him of a few shillings. What could be easier ?

Well, I simply hadn't banked on the utterly unreasonable response of the poker playing fraternity. You'd think they were in league with the bookies the way they carried on. It's not as though I was asking for the crown jewels. It seemed to hold no sway that the instrument in question was a top of the range de-luxe model with all the accessories. Cost a small fortune. Absolutely no appreciation of the scientific method some people. How are we ever going to take money off the layers if these stubborn attitudes prevail ?

Ah well, back to the drawing board. More from the crazy world of Royal Flush Towers in due course.

Keep raising,

The Viper
