Phil Hellmuth VS Poker Office

He uses rocket-science titles such as jackal, mouse, lion, elephant and eagle, depending on their style of play and plays each player depending on their animal type. The names are pretty self-explanatory – the mouse plays only the top ten hands and never raises, the jackal plays loose and wild, and so on.

By his standards you should aspire to being the eagle –but if you’re anything like me you’re probably the elephant – but whether you like Hellmuth’s system or not it still applies the same principles of watching the players at your table, which any poker player knows is the key to successful poker play.

The only downside to this is the length of time it can take to size up your opponents, particular in a slow starter of a game. On the Internet it can take longer still, which is where Poker Office comes in.

Okay it doesn’t label anyone an elephant, but will pin tails on all the donkeys, as well as marking out all the rocks, giving them slightly more sophisticated titles such as loose aggressive, passive preflop etc.

For me personally, as I’m certainly not blessed with a didactic memory – I have trouble remembering the days of the week, never mind the dazed and the weak on my table – Poker Office is a godsend.

As soon as I sit down at my virtual table I not only know how my opponents play in general but also have a history of every single hand I’ve ever played against them. It doesn’t make ME a better player but it stops me making the wrong move against the wrong player – most of the time anyway. Of course, all this magic only appears as long as you’ve played the guy before, but play the same site long enough and you’ll find it’s the same old faces winning races.

I’ve just discovered a feature that allows a replay of the previous night’s game – but with my opponents cards on show, allowing me to see just how they played their trip queens against my ace rag… as if it hadn’t been humiliating enough in the first place.

If you haven’t tried it before I got a free trial through Titan which allows you so many hands or you could try writing an article about it in the hope they give you it for free… but for your live games I’m afraid it’s back to the good old tried and trusted method – don’t miss a trick.
