This beautiful new casino is the latest Stanley offering from a poker perspective. The building was converted into a casino in 2004 and is one of the most spacious in the country. It is situated right in the heart of Manchester and is within walking distance of St Peter's Square and Piccadilly.

Parking around the casino is truly awful and the casino is to be congratulated on its Vegas style valet parking, which enables easy access to anyone travelling by car.

The poker room is newly appointed and currently has a capacity of 99 situated on 9 table. The set up is very efficient. Whilst the room is not massively spacious, it does have its own bar facilities and rest room area. As a consequence the waitress service is very quick and efficient. What this effectively does, is segregate the card room from the rest of the casino and that makes for an ideal environment. The competition gets under way shortly after 9.00 pm and as it is growing increasingly popular, you are recommended to get to the casino as early as possible to reserve your place. As is the Stanley tradition, a complimentary buffet is provided during a 30 minute break following the 2 hour buy in period. The buffet is quite impressive and has a wide selection of hot and cold oriental snacks.

There are a number of young students in the area who play poker and as they appear to be on a limited budget and consequently only have a couple of buy ins, it is not unknown for up to 3 tables to break up before the end of the buy in period. This generates "dead" money into the pot and ensures even greater value than usual. Having said that, expect a very lively table with multi buy ins and rigorous action.

If I have a criticism with the venue, it is the speed of the ante structure once the buy in period has finished. At present the antes rise every 15 minutes starting at 50 pts and 100 pts for the first hour, rising up to 100 pts and 200 pts before the break. Straight after the break, the 15 minute clock then comes into action and the antes go 300 pts 600 pts, 500 pts 1000 pts, 1000 pts 2000 pts, 2000 4000 pts etc, etc. I know it is the same for all players, but it consequently develops into a bit of crap shoot once the players reach the final table. I must point out this is only a very small criticism and in general this is a very good value game and one suited to players of all abilities. I would definitely recommend a visit to this wonderful new venue, as I believe it will quickly establish itself as a leading player on the Manchester poker scene. They currently only play poker on a Thursday night with a 20 buy in, but this will inevitably expand and become more and more popular.

The casino itself is extremely well appointed and spacious and is as impressive as anything in the UK market. It offers a plethora of electronic roulette tables, together with gaming machines, standard roulette, blackjack, carribean stud poker, punto banco and craps. The restaurant serves a typical Stanley menu and seemed very efficient and friendly. Bar snacks are also available and this is a particularly punter friendly venue.

I would strongly recommend a visit to the Circus as it is testimony to Stanley's every growing, poker friendly policy and the company deserve full credit for their support of live poker.
